You can either hit down on the ball, up on the ball or meet it at the bottom.
Hitting up on it slightly produces the best roll as long as the face is not lofted.A lofted face will cause the ball to jump and it depends on what type of green it lands on as to whether the distance you hit it will be in anyways predictable. If a putter begins the stroke at 4 degrees we would like to have it returned at 0.1 or so to ensure minimal skid and maximum roll. This is the feeling of the hands being ahead of the ball through impact. Hitting down on it tends to hit it into the ground first and then the ball jumps up.
Technically what might help?
Ball position is key. 1 or 2 inches to the target side of sternum is considered optimum to get this desired impact. Left hand leading through impact will also help
Drill
Place a ball between your left hand and the putter handle and hit some one handed strikes. Really good for this.
